Blocks and Admin Sidebar - Caravel Tutorial

Blocks and Admin Sidebar

Moving Blocks

Content on the caravel Web page is divided up into blocks. Blocks can be moved around on a page: When the mouse is in the bar next to the block tools, it turns into a four-headed arrow or hand, and the block can be dragged to another location with the mouse. (See figure 1.8).

Using the admin sidebar

Depending on your personal settings, you may or may not have the caravel admin sidebar (figure 1.9) located to the left of your screen.

Click the << or X to toggle sidebar visibility (figure 1.10).

The caravel admin sidebar provides the user with a site navigator, block clipboard, page help and trash clipboard. To maximize a certain clipboard, click on its name.

The site navigator allows users to quickly locate pages via a drop-down filing system, as opposed to clicking the correct sequence of links on the live Web site.

The block clipboard acts as a storage bin, making it easy to copy and move blocks to other pages. To copy a block to another page, drag it to the block clipboard, navigate to the appropriate page, and drag the block from the clipboard to the desired location. Holding down the control key while dragging will duplicate the block, keeping it in the sidebar for future use.

Page help serves as a customizable self-help directory. Click on the help icon in the top right-hand corner of the caravel page to create, add, remove or edit a help file. The changes will appear in the page help directory.

Delete an entire block by clicking on the trashcan icon. Doing so will move it to the trash clipboard. Retrieve a deleted block by dragging it out of the trash clipboard back onto the page.

Editing Content

Working with Editing Blocks

Each block uses the same basic setup and tools for editing content.
See figure 2.1 to identify the key tools for getting started.
  • To add a new row or a new column, hover over the first green plus sign and click “Add Column” or “Add Row.”
  • To delete a row or column, click the trash can item.  There is no confirmation pop-up, so be sure the row or column is unwanted.
  • To edit the contents of a block, click on the pencil button.  This will open up an HTML editor (see figure 2.2).
  • In the editor, add, delete, justify and number text just as you would in a word processor.  Hovering over each button provides a brief tool description.
  • Once you have made your changes, click Save and Preview to save your work and close the editor.

Toolbar and Publishing Mode

Edit the Web page settings by using the toolbar located in the upper-right portion of your screen (see figure 1.4).  Hovering (lingering with your mouse) over each tool should initiate a drop-down menu with further options. The two most commonly used tools are the publish button and the preview button.

Publishing button and publishing modes

  • If your page is set to dynamic mode, then whenever you save changes to a page, the public will see those changes as soon as you "save". The publishingstatus button is always green in dynamic mode.
  • But perhaps you'd like to make a change to a page and have someone else review or edit your changes before going public with new information: You can set your page to static mode. After you've made changes to a page, the publishing status button is red. When anyone else with login privileges logs in to your site, they'll see your edits. The public will not see your edited page until you publish the page by choosing publish from the publishing status drop-down menu (see figure 1.6).
  • To toggle between the two modes, click on “Use Published” or “Use Dynamic” (see figures 1.5 and 1.6).
  • Changing the mode of one page doesn’t change the mode of the other pages in your department.

The Preview button

  • Clicking the Preview button allows you to view the page as it would appear if you weren't logged in to Caravel.
  • In static mode, you'd also see your edits when previewing.
  • To return to edit mode, click on the pencil button.
